Job Posting – Fire Investigator – Office of the Fire Marshal
If you are a skilled bilingual investigator with strong communication and analytical skills, the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services would like you to consider this opportunity to become a Fire Investigator with the Office of the Fire Marshal. Your knowledge of fire investigation methods and practices are required to provide investigation services into the cause, origin and circumstance of fatal, large loss, gaseous explosions and incendiary fires across the Province.
What can I expect to do in this role?
As Fire Investigator, you will:
- create, organize and lead multi-agency teams (e.g. fire and police departments, technical staff) at fire scenes
- conduct investigations based on established fire investigation methodology regarding the origin, cause and circumstances of fires
- promote fire protection and prevention and be familiar with the delivery of fire safety and prevention programs
- assist in the development and delivery of training
- represent the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal in response to requests by fire or police departments, insurance adjusters and the public requiring the investigation of fires

How do I qualify?
- this position requires a minimum valid Class G driver's licence or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario
- candidate must clear federal and provincial security check and be able to be sworn in as a peace officer under the Criminal Code
- the successful candidate will be expected to work from a home office and will receive a monthly allowance for their office
- the candidate will be expected to report to a regional office at times
- this position requires that the successful candidate will be on-call 24 hours a day for certain days of the month and available at all hours to attend investigations
- this position also requires extensive travel throughout the Province
- you must be proficient in English and oral and written French at the advanced level
- advanced skills and expertise in applying knowledge of fire investigation methods and practices
- ability to apply knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations, such as the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Canada Evidence Act, Criminal Code of Canada, Coroners Act, Energy Act, Charter of Rights, Provincial Offences Act, Freedom of Information Act, Right to Privacy Act, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.
- knowledge of court proceedings including criminal investigations and rules of evidence to gather evidence and provide expert testimony
- oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to communicate tactfully and effectively with police and fire personnel, municipal officials, courts, media and the general public
- analytical and evaluative skills to provide administrative, organizational and planning duties to handle large case loads, and provide technical direction, advice, guidance, team leadership and training
- excellent computer skills
- The successful candidate will be required to undergo a satisfactory criminal reference check prior to the commencement of employment.
Salary range: $1,321.19 – $1,624.55 per week
