Standing together to make a difference

This Week @ Queen’s Park and Parliament Hill – March 20, 2020

  • Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the OACP has postponed Queen’s Park Day that was planned for March 31. We hope to hold this initiative later this year.
  • The Government of Canada announced a joint agreement with the U.S. to close the border to non-essential travel, a move meant to clamp down on COVID-19 while still allow the flow of critical supplies between the two countries.
  • The Government of Ontario announced that a State of Emergency has been declared in the province due to the COVID-19 crisis. This was done by an Order in Cabinet under the authority of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act. The state of emergency will last through March 31, 2020. It could be extended by Cabinet if required.
  • The Consumer Protection Act (CPA) is a key piece of Ontario’s consumer protection framework. It sets out rules to help protect consumers in everyday transactions — from buying clothing in a store, to renovating their home. The Government of Ontario is undertaking a comprehensive review of the CPA. It will consider changes to address advancing technology and marketplace innovations and streamline requirements for business and consumers. As a first step, the government is gathering information. It is using an on-line survey to learn about consumers’ awareness and understanding of the CPA and their experiences when making purchases. The survey also includes some questions related to consumers’ views and experiences with specific sectors. If you’re interested in completing the survey, you can find it at Ontario.ca/ConsumerReview. The survey will close on May 11, 2020.
  • The OACP was invited to provide input on Bill 161, the Smarter and Stronger Justice Act, which passed Second Reading on March 5, 2020. We have declined as our police legal advisors determined after reviewing the Bill that the legislation did not contain anything of any real interest to the OACP.
